The Future of Tablets Nvidia Quad-Core Tegra 4 CPU

Nvidia Tegra classifies its technology as a “system on a chip”. Each chip contains a memory controller, northbridge, southbridge and ARM architecture processor CPU and GPU. The chips were designed to consume low amounts of power extending the life of mobile devices and playing audio and video at performance levels not seen by other mobile technology. These chips were also designed for versatility and are able to be used in mobile internet devices, smart phones and personal digital assistants.
The Nvidia Tegra 2 is the first multitasking dual core CPU of its kind and already on the market. Price ranges from $250 and upwards depending on the mobile device. Considered a super mobile chip, the Tegra 2 CPU makes browsing faster, enhances game play, increases performance capability and hastens response time on mobile devices.
Tegra 2 is built with a Dual Core ARM Cortex A9 CPU featuring a frequency of 1 GHz per core designed for efficiency. Tegra 2 is capable of supporting low powered applications. The ULP GeForce GPU brings the ability to play 3D games on mobile devices to light as well as an interactive 3D interface. Also, Tegra 2 provides a way for users to store HD movies on their devices then watch them on their HD TV, all without draining the battery. This feature is made possible through the 1080p video playback processor.
Sometime in 2011, Nvidia expects to release the Tegra 4 CPU which they are referring to as “Wayne.” Cost will be determined on a device by device basis. The Tegra 4 is projected to have about 10 times the performance power of Tegra 2 while consuming even less power. According to rumors, Tegra 4 will use about half the power of Tegra 2. The Nvidia Tegra 4 is slated to be so fast and powerful that most apps will not be able to utilize its full potential. The Tegra 4 will not only focus on speed but energy efficiency.
